Recipients, and up

Communication goes both ways

An alert is only
half the conversation.

The easy part is sending. The part that matters is what comes back. A one-way blast tells you what you said; a reply tells you what's happening on the ground — who's safe, who needs help, who's already moving.

whoot. SMS is two-way by design. Recipients reply straight from their phone's Messages app, and every response threads back to your team next to your voice channels — one number, one list, both directions.

Reaches any phone

No app to install, no data connection needed. If they carry a mobile, your message lands in their normal Messages inbox — and texts get read fast.

It talks back

Recipients just reply from their standard Messages app. Every response threads back into whoot. — right beside your voice channels.

Know who's OK

A blast only tells you what you sent. Replies tell you what's actually happening — who's safe, who's stuck, who's already on their way.

One list, both ways

Send and receive on one number and one list. No separate inbox to babysit — the people you alert are the people you hear back from.

Choose your band

Pick the tier that
covers your list.

The monthly fee keeps up to N recipients live and reachable both ways — it pays for readiness, not consumption. Each band bundles a pooled monthly allowance you spend sending or receiving. Prices are RRP, ex-VAT.

Overage

Go beyond your pool and you keep sending and receiving — every extra segment, either direction, is a flat £0.13 +VAT. Same rate on every tier.

Cap it if you like

A per-tenant toggle stops SMS at the included pool — no overage, no surprises. The allowance is monthly and doesn't roll over.

The details · how usage is measured

Billed by the segment.
Both ways.

You're billed by the segment, not the message — and a reply counts exactly the same as a send. Here's what a segment is, and how to keep two-way volume predictable.

GSM-7 · plain text

A–Z, 0–9, basic punctuation. The default — keep messages here.

160

chars / 1 segment

153

chars / segment when split

UCS-2 · rich text

Any emoji, £, €, curly quotes, or accented / non-Latin character.

70

chars / 1 segment

67

chars / segment when split

Worked examples

Short plain alertGSM-7

“Evacuate now. Proceed calmly to Assembly Point B.”

49 chars · 1 segment

Under 160 plain characters — one segment.

Longer plain alertGSM-7

“Security incident at the north entrance. Evacuate now via the south and west exits, do not use the lifts, and follow your floor warden's instructions to Assembly Point B.”

170 chars · 2 segments

Past 160, so counted at 153 chars/segment. Note the straight apostrophe.

Same message, one smart quoteUCS-2

“Security incident at the north entrance. Evacuate now via the south and west exits, do not use the lifts, and follow your floor warden’s instructions to Assembly Point B.”

170 chars · 3 segments

A single curly ’ flips the whole message to UCS-2 — 67 chars/segment.

A reply coming backGSM-7

“Safe and accounted for at Point B.”

34 chars · 1 segment

Replies are metered the same as sends — one segment here.

Notice examples two and three: the exact same words, the same length, but a single curly ’ quote (the kind autocorrect inserts) instead of a straight one jumps them from two segments to three. One special character — a smart quote, an emoji, a £ sign or an accented letter — flips the whole message to UCS-2. The cheapest way to keep costs down is to keep messages plain text.

Sizing your pool

Two-way volume adds up — plan for the reply.

Because replies are metered too, a real exchange is your send plus the responses that come back. It's the return leg people forget: 250 replies is at least 250 segments, on top of the outbound send.

Each tier's allowance is sized to cover several full-list, two-way exchanges a month — real events and drills included.

One full two-way exchange

A 2-segment alert to a 250-person list, everyone replies once.

Outbound · 2 × 250500
Inbound · 1 × 250250
One exchange750

The up to 250 tier includes 3,000 segments — roughly four full exchanges a month before any overage. Test sends draw from the same pool.

Always-on reachability

The monthly fee keeps up to N recipients live and reachable — readiness for Martyn's Law, not per-use billing.

Pooled, flat per tenant

One shared monthly allowance for the whole tenant — it doesn't scale with the number of user seats.

Both directions count

Your sends and their replies draw from the same pool — so plan for the return leg of every exchange.

Costs you control

Flat £0.13/segment beyond the pool, both ways — or cap it off entirely. Monthly, with no rollover.

FAQ

Two-way SMS,
answered.

Why two-way SMS and not just alerts?

Because a broadcast only tells you what you sent — the replies are where the value is. Two-way SMS lets you see who's safe, who needs help and who acknowledged. whoot. SMS is two-way by design: recipients reply from their normal Messages app and every response comes back to your team, beside your voice channels.

Do recipients need the whoot. app?

No. SMS reaches any mobile phone with no app to install and no data connection required. Recipients receive your message and reply in their standard Messages inbox — and the whole exchange still lands back inside whoot. for your team to act on.

What am I actually paying for each month?

Always-on reachability of up to N recipients, in both directions. The monthly fee keeps your list live and ready; the included allowance covers the messages you send and the replies you receive. It's a flat pool per tenant — it does not scale with the number of user seats.

How is usage measured?

By the segment, in both directions. A segment is 160 characters of plain text (or 70 if the message contains an emoji, a £ sign or accented characters), and longer messages use more than one. Sends and replies both count. There's a full, worked breakdown in how billing works.

What happens if I go over my allowance?

You keep sending and receiving. Overage is a flat £0.13 per segment +VAT, in both directions, on every tier — no surprise cut-offs. Prefer a hard stop? Toggle overage off in billing and SMS pauses at your included pool until next month.

Does the allowance roll over?

No. The pool is monthly and use-it-or-lose-it, and test sends draw from the same pool — so factor your drills in when you pick a tier. The allowance is sized to cover several full-list, two-way exchanges a month, real events and testing included.

What if I have more than 5,000 recipients?

Above 5,000 recipients we build a custom package. Talk to us and we'll size it around your list and expected volume.
