Audio Settings
Fine-tune your input and output devices, adjust quality preferences, and troubleshoot audio issues.
whoot. lets you choose which microphone and speaker/headphone to use. Access audio settings from the gear icon in the channel controls.
- Input device — Select your preferred microphone
- Output device — Select your preferred speakers or headphones
If you plug in a new device while connected to a channel, whoot. will detect it automatically. You can switch devices without leaving the channel.
Browser Microphone Permissions
The first time you join a channel, your browser will ask for microphone permission. You must Allow access for whoot. to work.
Chrome
- Click the lock icon in the address bar
- Find "Microphone" in the permissions list
- Set it to "Allow"
- Refresh the page
Firefox
- Click the shield icon in the address bar
- Click "Connection secure" → "More Information"
- Go to the "Permissions" tab
- Find "Use the Microphone" and set to "Allow"
Safari
- Go to Safari → Settings → Websites
- Select "Microphone" in the sidebar
- Find the whoot. domain and set to "Allow"
Echo Cancellation
whoot. relies on your browser's built-in Acoustic Echo Cancellation (AEC). For best results:
- Use headphones — This completely eliminates echo
- Avoid speakers near your microphone — If you must use speakers, keep them pointed away from your mic
- Lower speaker volume — Reduces echo leakage when not using headphones
Noise Suppression
Modern browsers include built-in noise suppression that filters out background noise like fans, keyboard clicks, and ambient room noise. This is enabled by default in whoot.
Audio Quality Monitoring
Administrators can monitor audio quality across all channels from the Call Quality dashboard. Key metrics include:
- MOS Score — Mean Opinion Score from 1 (worst) to 5 (best)
- Jitter — Variation in packet arrival time (lower is better)
- Packet Loss — Percentage of audio packets lost in transit
- Latency — Round-trip audio delay in milliseconds
See the Session Replay guide for reviewing historical audio quality data.
Troubleshooting
- Verify your microphone is connected and turned on
- Check browser permissions (see above)
- Try selecting a different input device in audio settings
- Test your microphone in another application to confirm it works
Can't hear other users
- Check that your output device is correct and volume is up
- Make sure the browser tab isn't muted (check the tab icon)
- Try a different output device
Poor audio quality
- Check your internet connection — whoot. needs at least 100 Kbps upstream
- Close other bandwidth-heavy applications (video streaming, large downloads)
- Switch to a wired connection if you're on Wi-Fi with poor signal
Next Steps
- Push-to-Talk — Master PTT and Latch modes
