Push-to-Talk
whoot. uses push-to-talk (PTT) as the default voice transmission mode. Hold a key to speak, release to listen. Zero crosstalk, zero accidental hot-mics.
How Push-to-Talk Works
When you join a channel, your microphone is connected but muted by default. To transmit audio:
- Press and hold the PTT area
- Speak — your audio is transmitted to everyone in the channel
- Release — your microphone mutes and you return to listening mode
A visual indicator shows when you're transmitting, and other users see a speaking indicator next to your name.
Latch Mode (Toggle)
Latch mode flips the behaviour: instead of holding the key, you click once to start speaking and click again to stop. This is ideal for longer conversations or when you need both hands on the keyboard.
To enable latch mode, look for the toggle in your channel controls. You can switch between PTT and Latch at any time without leaving the channel.
Transmission Permissions
Channel administrators can control who is allowed to transmit audio. Options include:
- Open — All channel members can transmit
- Restricted — Only users with specific roles can transmit; others can listen only
This is useful for channels like "Company All-Hands" where leadership speaks and the team listens.
Audio Quality
whoot. uses WebRTC with automatic codec negotiation to deliver sub-100ms audio latency. The system automatically selects the best codec based on network conditions:
- Opus — The default codec, offering excellent quality at low bandwidth
- Automatic bitrate adaptation — Quality adjusts dynamically to network conditions
- Echo cancellation — Built-in browser AEC prevents feedback loops
- Noise suppression — Reduces background noise automatically
Troubleshooting
PTT key not working?
- Check that your microphone permissions are granted in your browser settings
- Try a different browser if the issue persists
Audio cutting out?
- Check your network connection — whoot. requires a stable internet connection
- Review the Audio Settings page for device configuration
- whoot. has automatic reconnection — if your connection drops momentarily, it will reconnect automatically
